Hello everyone! Welcome to another book tour date with WOW! Women on Writing, today’s review is Black Madonna: A Pope’s Deadly Obsession by L. Lee Kane.
*Disclaimer – I received a free digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review as part of this tour, you can find my full disclaimer HERE.*
This novel follows Luci de Foix, an academic who has had a fairly tragic life – all beginning with her parents dying in an apparent car accident as a young child. After spending some time in a suspicious orphanage before being raised by her wonderful grandparents, Luci’s life is thrown out of whack when a bloodied young man delivers her a journal from one of her ancestors.
In a whirlwind of events, Luci discovers that her parents’ death was no accident, and that a group known as The Order (under the protection of the Pope) has been watching her family for a very long time, and will stop at nothing to get their hands on that journal. The journal contains a lost codex protected for centuries since Luci’s ancestor Esclarmonde, a Cathar leader wrote down their secrets and the largely believed “end” of the sect. The novel switches from Luci’s perspective to Esclamonde’s diary throughout the novel.
This journal takes Luci from the comfort of her San Francisco college to a epic journey across Europe discovering the secrets of the Cathars, her ancestry and the journal itself. All while overcoming her panic attacks and partaking in a little romance on the way.
