Inspired by her mother, Rina Z. Neiman tells a story from the perspective of Shulamit Dubno (affectionately called Shula) a young Jewish girl whose family has fled Poland to Tel Aviv during the events of World War II. Tensions are high on Tel Aviv between the Jewish and Arab people and while Shula’s family feels comfort being back in Eretz Yisrael, The Land of Israel, they are not in the clear from danger.  Shula is surrounded by family – including her mother Rachel, father Yaakov, her brothers Avraham and Yisrael (who was born during the events of the book) as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and a grandfather.

“Jesus or Muhammond, it doesn’t really matter. The Jews always have problems” – Rachel Dubno (Neiman, page 8)

With the backdrop of historical events, from the persecution of the Jewish people in Europe, to the Jewish-Arab conflict over the holy land (which still continues to this day) and the British occupation of Tel Aviv – we follow Shula and her family over the span of about 15 years as they face ups and downs, happiness and grief, love and loss.

“State of Israel. Born under fire.” – Avraham Dubno (Neiman, page 176)

We watch Shula grow from a small girl with little knowledge of the world to a young woman with an extraordinary musical talent as she aspires to become a concert pianist. Conflict in the area time and time again puts her dreams on hold, but she is determined to succeed, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes up for her – but you’ll have to pick up your copy of Born Under Fire to find out how it went for her!

Born Under Fire was an amazing novel inspired by the author’s mother’s real life experiences in a major time of conflict for the Jewish people in the 20th century, I highly recommend it to anyone who loved a historical backdrop to their reading!
