Ira Shuman always dreamed of a better life for his family, leaving Poland and the continuous persecution of the Jewish People and immigrating to America to start a new life. In the early 1900’s he does just that, heads to America with his brother to lay the ground work for their families to live a prosperous life in a new land. Ira leaves behind his wife Ruth and his four sons, and while he is away, tragedy strikes their family and three of the four sons die. When Ira returns to be with his family, he finds a disconnected Ruth and a bubbly 6 year old Charles. On that trip Ira promises to bring them to America soon, along with the new baby that Ruth is pregnant with.
While reluctant to leave her home in Poland, a few years pass and Ruth takes the tickets Ira has sent and immigrates to Illinois with 11 year old Charles and 3 year old Ava in tow. America is not what Ruth expects, and while her children instantly thrive, she struggles for a very long time to adjust to life in Illinois.
Follow the Shuman family over a few decades while they navigate immigrant life, forbidden love, changing relationships and growing up in a new land!
