Here are the 5 books we read that I’d recommend (4 on topic, 1 silly)

1. The Berenstain Bears’ New Baby by Stan & Jan Berenstain

An absolute classic, the Bear Family is preparing for the arrival of their new baby, but first they need to transition Brother Bear out of the baby furniture and into a big kid bed. Brother and Papa Bear head to the woods to chop down trees and process the wood into a new bed and as they arrive home with the completed project, they are greeted by Mama who has given birth to a baby girl!

2. The New Baby by Mercer Mayer

This Little Critter classic (let’s be honest they all are), has LC showing us the ways that big siblings can be a big help when the new baby comes home. From helping with diaper changes, pushing the stroller or helping rock baby to sleep, big siblings can be a BIG help when baby arrives.

3. How to Welcome a New Baby by Jean Reagan

From the author of How to Babysit a Grandma and How to Babysit a Grandpa comes this adorable story on how to welcome a new baby to your family. It shows all of the ways a big sibling can help their parents and grandparents prepare for the new baby, like suggesting the perfect name (T. Rex and Rainbow of course!), getting the car seat ready, making a welcome sign and more!

4. What Brothers Do Best by Laura Numeroff

From one of my all time favourite children’s authors who brought us classics like If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Give a Moose a Muffin comes this super sweet book about all the wonderful things big brothers can do for little siblings such as helping you climb a tree, do a puzzle with you and help you clean your room.

5. Alligator Baby by Robert Munsch

I promised you a silly story! While this book isn’t necessarily a “prepping for baby” book, it is a silly book to read that also shows how important big siblings can be to the new baby. Kristen’s mom and dad were so frazzled and out of it after accidentally giving birth at the zoo that they kept bringing home the wrong baby! Kristen saves the day and brings home the right baby with people legs, people arms and a people face! It continues to be one of our favourite stories to read!
