My Favourite Things – Harry Potter

My friends and family know me so well! Almost every Christmas and birthday, I receive some Harry Potter merchandise as gifts, and I LOVE IT!! My Mum and my sister fuel the passion more than anyone else, with my Mum knitting me my Gryffindor scarf, buying me all of the book and movies and buying various things to satisfy the fan girl inside of me! My sister gave me my Hogwarts letter last Christmas (only 16 years late I might add!) and this year gave me a Gryffindor ring, Newt Scamander’s case from Fantastic Beasts and the Funko Hogwarts Express with Harry Potter figure!

My favourite thing about the Harry Potter series is that I was part of the generation that grew up with the characters of Harry Potter. When I discovered HP, Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets were out, and Prisoner of Azkaban was about to be released. As anyone who has read HP knows, the books get more mature as you progress through the series. One of the advantages of having to wait for the next book to come out, as that you are a little bit older when it’s released and you are maturing at the same rate as the characters in the book! While I was still at the Library I noticed children who were 11 years old busting through all of the books and getting to the darker, final books and having a hard time with them.

I also appreciate the community that formed around the Harry Potter books and movies, while they are fantasy novels, they reach over a broad range of universal topics: love, good versus evil, friendship, struggles of growing up, the importance of family (blood or chosen) and prejudice.

While there are ways that I wish the movie had been done differently (I always thought the series should be a Game of Thrones type series, it is much more suited to a television show), I will always treasure them even if we are missing two key things:

  1. Peeves
  2. The Dursley’s final interaction with Harry in Deathly Hallows (re: “I don’t think you’re a waste of space”)

I also, ten years later, am starting to forgive JK for some of the character deaths in the books (Fred, Dobby, Hedwig, Sirius, Tonks and Lupin), but that doesn’t mean I will suddenly stop crying even time I read or watch them!

Here are my HP favourites:

House: Gryffindor

Book: Prisoner of Azkaban

(non Golden Trio) Character: Weasley Twins

Creature: Fang

Teacher: Minerva McGonagall

Spell: Wingardium LeviOsa

Bad Guy: Bellatrix Lestrange

What are YOUR favourite things about the Harry Potter series? Let me know in the comments!

Until next time,

Amanda, xo.

  1. I absolutely love Harry Potter too! This year I got a Time Turner from a comic expo and it’s my new favourite statement necklace. I think it will ALWAYS bother me that Peeves never made it to the final movie cuts. I remember playing the video games and he was hilarious in them.
